An accurate impression and model are absolutely essential to a successful outcome in restorative dentistry.

Almost all lab-work problems involve one or more of the following 4 issues related to impressions and models:
1. The dentist may not see washed areas, tears, or voids in the impression . . . which the lab will be required to deal with, and may result in an additional appointment for a new impression, or a remake if the lab doesn't 'adjust' the die properly.
2. Lack of required reduction for the desired restoration . . . which results in excessive chair-time, or switching to a "second choice" for the restoration, or an added expense for a trim coping, or even a complete remake.
3. Even after you do the best prep you've ever done . . . the patient may bite so hard they bend the tray, or they're reconsidering and adjusting their bite as the impression materials are setting.
4. The bite / articulation set wrong and the restoration is produced to fit the wrong bite . . . which results in excessive chair-time, or compromised esthetics or strength or even a remake if there's too much adjusting.
The real impact of these problems is eroded profits, however, most dentists don't give that too much thought because they didn't have to stop and write a check for the added costs at that moment.

These problems can cost you large amounts of money each year - but the total would be very difficult to calculable. Worst of all, the problems often frustrate the patients and can cause them to have some doubts about your abilities - even if you give them a plausible explanation.

2. At the completion of the scan, iTero™ indicates if there's adequate reduction for the restoration that you want. That eliminates those annoying calls from the lab telling you that there isn't enough room for the restoration you want.

4. iTero™ models are articulated based on the scan, so the lab is not 'hand-setting' the bite based on subjective indications. That means you don't have to deal with 'high occlusion' or other problems resulting from 'hand-set' bites.
